Shot peening to reduce stress corrosion

Shot peening to reduce the effect of stress corrosion cracking

It is well documented that corrosive environments particularly chloride based can react with a material and significantly reduce its performance.

Modes of failure can be both intergranular and trans granular depending on the material and environmental conditions, but the resultant failure can be catastrophic.

Effect of corrosion on fatigue strength of un-peened and shot peened 7075 T6

As can be seen from the work carried out by Seong Kyun cheongl, Ji Hun am’, Jae Heon ~ee’, Tae Hyung ~im~ Seoul National University of Technology, Nowon-Gu, Seoul 139-743, Korea ‘ he Graduate School of Energy & Environment, Seoul National University of Technology, Nowon-Gu, Seoul 139-743, Korea Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sogang University, Mapo-Gu, Seoul 121-742, Korea from their paper entitled ‘EFFECTS OF SHOT PEENING ON THE CORROSION FATIGUE LIFE OF AL 7075-T6’. The following data is extracted from that work identifying the significance of shot peening on the resistance to corrosion and hence the improvement in fatigue life.
