Shot peening is a method of introducing compressive stress into the surface of a material.
This compressive stress can be introduced by the mechanical impact of different types of spherical shot impacting a surface. This impact needs to be sufficient to plastically deform the surface at a microscopic level in order to modify the energy state in the component outer surface.
