At the recently held Montreal World Conference on Shot Peening, Sandwell Technical Director Colin McGrory presented The paper ‘Nanocrystallisation on the surface of superalloy In718 component with a commercial shot peening process’.
The conference is a triennial event to discuss the latest advances in shot peening technology and brings together the world’s leading experts from both industry and academia.
The paper is the result of much intense work by Colin, Ben McGrory and Yijun Liu from the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC).
The paper focusses on the development of a shot peening process by analysing the mass energy flow required to produce a surface nanocrystalline structure. This process produces a hybrid structure with both increased fatigue, wear and anti-bacterial properties.
Since the conference, Innovate UK is funding the continuation and expansion of the research, which is to conclude other materials as well as the testing of the mechanical attributes.
Shortly after the conference, Colin met up with fellow industry experts for a meeting of the SAE Committee on Surface Enhancement. Colin has been part of this committee for the past 6 years and their recent work has been focussed on a revision of AMS2430 which is a baseline standard for Automatic Shot Peening. The revised standard will include a manual peening option subject to Customer/Primes consent and should be available early 2018.
