As can be seen the alloy 304 has considerably more hardenability due to the effect of shot peening which transforms approximately 50% of the Austenite to Martensite. The 316 does not as easily transform to martensite owing to the additional Nickel and Molybdenum which stabilises the Austenite. Residual tensile stresses, often introduced during machining or as a result of uneven cooling of welds or castings are detrimental as they facilitate crack propagation. Shot peening adds a layer of residual compressive stress beneath the surface of a component, which can counter-act tensile residual stresses, and applied (in service) stresses, significantly increasing the life of a component before failure. Understanding the residual stress within a component can prevent cracks and failures by helping to identify which areas benefit most from surface treatment and tuning the process to suit. The Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) method is one of the ways to measure the effect of residual stress. ESPI, sometimes referred to as TV Holography, is a technique which uses laser light, together with digital imaging and processing to visualise minute displacements on the surface of components. In addition, traditional finishing methods are often unable to deal with the intricate and complex shapes that AM makes possible, at least within a sensible commercial time frame. The paper focusses on the development of a shot peening process by analysing the mass energy flow required to produce a surface nanocrystalline structure. This process produces a hybrid structure with both increased fatigue, wear and anti-bacterial properties. After substantial in-house research and development, RoboPeen cumulates in a 8-axis synchronous shot peening cell. This set-up allows for a not before seen level of agility and can therefore deliver outstanding shot peening results. Key to these results are the semi-automated programming algorithms, that allow for both the angle of impingement as well as the standoff to be optimised throughout the entire process. One of these was the restoration of a 1937 Bugatti 57S. Sandwell were commissioned to Superfinish transmissions parts and the camshafts for this magnificent car. Sandwell have recently expanded their superfinishing capabilities with the addition of another top of the range superfinishing machine. Not only can Sandwell now produce surface finishes in the sub 0. 1 Ra region, but also cater for large (up to 1 m long) components. Given this expertise, Sandwell were asked to Superfinish the camshafts of the Classic Bugatti, as it is an ideal process to reduce friction on critical surfaces such as on gears, crankshafts, rockers, etc. Below are some images illustrating the process; left-to-right we see the pre-process part, the middle image shows the shaft as it is masked in preparation for the process. The latest apprentice coming through the system is Megan Ducker, who now has a full time role at Sandwell as a Finishing Technician. Megan spent her apprenticeship at Sandwell learning about all of the different processes and by the end of her time as an apprentice was capable of carrying out many different surface engineering processes such as Shot Peening, Bead Blasting, Chemi Blacking, Satinising and many more. It’s great to earn a qualification and progress in a career you love, especially when it helps you to become financially independent and confident in your own skills. I first took an interest in cars when I was about 14. My friend was a mechanic but I didn’t really think about engineering as a career. However, after three months of studying engineering as an NVQ during my A-levels, I realised that it was what I wanted to do and it was the only reason I enjoyed going to school. When I started my Apprenticeship at Sandwell I found that it was better for me to learn from experience rather than being shown on paper. This hands-on approach has enabled me to learn about the practical elements of my role as well as improving my ability to apply this knowledge to my studies.
